On the Sidelines of the 1st Physical Therapy International Conference in Education, the Faculty of Physical Therapy at October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA) organized a specialized workshop entitled “Basics of ICU Physiotherapy & Mechanical Ventilation”, presented by Dr. Ali El Ghamrawy, Teaching Assistant at the Department of Physical Therapy for Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.
The workshop aimed to enhance the clinical and practical skills of students and physical therapists in the field of critical care, with a focus on the fundamental principles of ICU physiotherapy and the management of mechanically ventilated patients, as one of the most essential and advanced areas in modern clinical practice.
The workshop covered several important scientific and practical topics, including:
- An introduction to the role of the physical therapist in intensive care units and the importance of early intervention in maintaining vital functions and reducing complications.
- Basics of mechanical ventilation, including different ventilation modes and types of ventilators.
- Understanding vital signs monitoring and patient stability assessment during ICU physiotherapy sessions.
- Respiratory physiotherapy techniques aimed at improving pulmonary function in critically ill patients.
- Strategies to enhance lung ventilation, airway clearance techniques, and optimization of gas exchange.
- Principles of early mobilization in ICU settings and its role in minimizing complications and improving recovery outcomes.
- Safe handling and mobilization of mechanically ventilated patients during physiotherapy interventions.
- Discussion of clinical case scenarios linking theoretical knowledge with clinical practice.
The workshop witnessed remarkable interaction and engagement from students and participants, providing valuable hands-on experience and opportunities for knowledge exchange in one of the most specialized and critical areas of physical therapy practice. It also contributed to preparing competent healthcare professionals capable of effectively managing critically ill patients according to the latest evidence-based practices and clinical guidelines.
This workshop was part of a series of scientific and educational activities accompanying the conference, aiming to bridge the gap between academic education and clinical application while enhancing students’ and practitioners’ professional competencies in line with recent advancements in physical therapy and healthcare.
