
An Extra Chromosome, An Extra Spark Awareness Campaign
In conjunction with Down Syndrome Awareness Month, the Pediatrics Department at the Faculty of Physical Therapy, October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA) successfully organized the awareness campaign “An Extra Chromosome, An Extra Spark”, aiming to promote awareness, inclusion, and understanding of individuals with Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21) while highlighting their abilities, talents, and active role in society.
The event featured distinguished contributions from Dr. Abdelrahman Shawky Refaee, PhD, Consultant Pediatrician (Children with Special Needs) and Pediatric Neurology Fellow at Abu Elreesh Pediatric Hospital – Cairo University, Dr. Safy Eldin Mahmoud AboAli, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy for Pediatrics, and Dr. Kholoud Reyad, AL of Physical Therapy for Pediatrics at MSA University, whose insightful sessions addressed the clinical, developmental, and rehabilitative perspectives of Down Syndrome, emphasizing the vital role of physical therapy in enhancing functional independence and quality of life, while also encouraging inclusive attitudes and challenging common misconceptions.
The campaign further showcased and discussed research projects presented by fifth-year students regarding the Occupational Therapy course, reflecting strong engagement in evidence-based practice and innovative rehabilitation approaches, and ultimately succeeded in fostering empathy, collaboration, and professional responsibility among attendees, reinforcing the Faculty’s commitment to community engagement, sustainability, and global values in preparing future healthcare professionals to advocate for equitable, inclusive, and high-quality care for all.
