The Faculty of Mass Communication at October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA), through the MSA Drama Club, invites students to take part in the “Screen-Free” initiative, an awareness-driven event that encourages participants to step away from digital devices and reconnect with real-life experiences and human interaction.
The initiative comes as a conscious call to reconsider the growing role of smartphones, screens, and electronic devices in everyday life, highlighting the importance of restoring a healthy balance between the virtual world and real-world connections.
“Screen-Free” aims to raise awareness of the potential physical, psychological, and social effects associated with continuous screen exposure, including eye strain, sleep disruption, social isolation, and reduced concentration. At the same time, the initiative encourages participants to explore meaningful alternatives that can contribute to a better quality of life.
These alternatives include spending quality time with family and friends, participating in sports, reading, enjoying nature, and rediscovering hands-on hobbies and activities that may have become less present in daily life due to increased dependence on technology.
The initiative emphasizes that being “screen-free” does not mean rejecting technology or completely abandoning digital platforms. Rather, it promotes a more mindful and balanced approach to digital consumption, encouraging individuals to manage their screen time and avoid excessive dependence on electronic devices.
The event will also provide an opportunity to engage in discussions around the importance of being more present in everyday moments and strengthening genuine human connections beyond likes, shares, and digital interactions.
The event features Prof. Dr. Mona El-Hadidy, Professor in the Radio and Television Department at the Faculty of Mass Communication and a member of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, alongside Director Ahmed Abdel Aleem Qassem.
Through this initiative, the Faculty of Mass Communication encourages the MSA community to pause, reconnect, and rediscover the value of real-world experiences, stronger social relationships, and a more balanced relationship with technology.
