The Computer and Systems Engineering Department at the Faculty of Engineering, MSA University, in collaboration with the Innovation Hub, is set to organize a hands-on workshop entitled “Chat with Your Docs: Build Your First RAG,” taking participants from implementation to evaluation of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems.

The workshop will introduce students to how documents can be transformed into the foundation of an AI assistant, while exploring how to evaluate the quality and reliability of the answers generated from retrieved information.

The session will be delivered by Abdelrahman ElMoghazy, Senior Data Scientist at Fertiglobe, providing students with practical insights into the development and evaluation of AI systems.

Using open-source models in Google Colab, participants will work through the key stages of building a RAG system. They will learn how to prepare documents, split them into chunks, and create embeddings, before implementing semantic search using FAISS and keyword search using BM25.

The workshop will then explore how these approaches can be combined into a hybrid retrieval pipeline, followed by generating answers grounded in the retrieved documents. Participants will also learn how to evaluate both retrieval and answer quality using RAGAS, investigate system failures, test improvements, and understand the limitations of automated evaluation.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have a working notebook and a practical understanding of how to build, measure, and improve a Retrieval-Augmented Generation system.

The workshop is organized with the support of Prof. Dr. Samer Ibrahim, Head of the Computer and Systems Engineering Department, and Prof. Dr. Mona Farouk, Head of the Innovation Hub, as part of the university’s efforts to bring practical AI development closer to students and strengthen the connection between academic learning and real-world applications.

Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops and be ready for a hands-on learning experience.
