CardioFit Lab Enhances Clinical Decision-Making Skills in Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing at MSA University
The Faculty of Physical Therapy at October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA) organized a specialized applied workshop entitled “CardioFit Lab: From Measurement to Clinical Decision-Making”, as part of its commitment to advancing clinical competencies, supporting continuous professional development, and strengthening the connection between academic knowledge and practical clinical application.
The workshop was attended by faculty members, Teaching Assistants, and internship students, and focused on the advanced role of Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) in the comprehensive assessment of cardiovascular and respiratory function, as well as functional exercise capacity.
Participants explored the clinical value of CPET in evaluating patients with cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, identifying the underlying causes of exercise intolerance, and supporting the development of individualized treatment and rehabilitation plans.
The scientific component of the workshop addressed the physiological responses of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems during exercise, including:
Oxygen Uptake (VO₂)
Carbon Dioxide Production (VCO₂)
Minute Ventilation (VE)
Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER)
Anaerobic Threshold
Oxygen Pulse
Ventilatory Equivalents
Participants were also introduced to key parameters used to assess functional capacity and physiological responses to exercise, enabling them to develop a deeper understanding of how CPET findings can support clinical evaluation.
The practical component provided hands-on exposure to the CPET equipment and its essential components, alongside training on patient preparation, safe test procedures, continuous monitoring of vital and physiological parameters, and the interpretation of CPET graphs and test results.
The workshop also emphasized the importance of integrating physiological data into clinical decision-making and individualized rehabilitation planning, enabling participants to translate test findings into practical clinical information relevant to physical therapy and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.
Through this applied learning experience, the Faculty of Physical Therapy continues to support the development of clinically competent professionals capable of combining scientific knowledge, diagnostic interpretation, and evidence-based practice in contemporary rehabilitation settings.
