MSA University Hosts “The Smart TA Masterclass” to Support Academic Staff Development

The Faculty of Arts & Design at October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA), under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Tarek Saleh, Dean of the Faculty, successfully hosted “The Smart TA Masterclass: Enhancing Educator Workflows & Shaping the Future”, as part of the Faculty’s commitment to internal community service, educational quality, and the continuous professional development of newly appointed and experienced academic staff.

The masterclass was designed, organized, and delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sarah Nabih, whose structured preparation and practical approach provided participants with an engaging and relevant professional development experience.

Held at the SSB Cinema Hall, the three-hour interactive session brought together a strong turnout of Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Assistant Lecturers (ALs), including both newly appointed and experienced staff members from the Faculty of Arts & Design and other faculties across MSA University.

Designed as a supportive and judgment-free learning environment, the masterclass focused on helping young academics work more efficiently, manage their responsibilities effectively, and navigate the practical challenges of academic life with greater confidence.

The session addressed several key areas, including:

AI as a Workflow Partner: Exploring the ethical use of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude to support administrative tasks, email drafting, and grading-related work, with the potential to save several hours each week.
Ethics and Scope Clarity: Clarifying the roles, responsibilities, and professional boundaries of Teaching Assistants and Assistant Lecturers.
Professional Communication: Introducing practical frameworks, including the DESC script, to support respectful communication and the establishment of clear professional boundaries.
Managing Academic Stress: Presenting research-informed approaches to addressing workload pressure, role overload, and burnout.

The masterclass combined practical tools, professional guidance, and open discussion, enabling participants to reflect on their current practices and identify more effective approaches to managing academic responsibilities.

Post-event feedback was highly positive, with attendees particularly appreciating the practical value of the strategies introduced and the collaborative atmosphere of the session.

Through initiatives such as this masterclass, the Faculty of Arts & Design continues to support the professional growth of its academic staff and foster a positive, efficient, and future-oriented academic culture across MSA University.
