
MSA Faculty of Physical Therapy Hosted A Seminar on E-Cigarette Risks
The Faculty of Physical Therapy at October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA) held an awareness seminar entitled: Quit Smoking & Breathe in the presence of students of different faculties under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Olfat Diab, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Therapy, and Prof. Dr. Heba Abdeen, the Vice Dean of Community Service and the Environmental Affairs.
The first session was presented by Prof. Dr. Reem ElKorashy, Professor of Pulmonology and Chest diseases at the Faculty of Medicine Cairo University and it focused on the alarming increase in the use of e-cigarettes among children and young people, whose use rates exceed those of adults in many countries. Exposure to e-cigarette content on social media, even for a short period, is associated with a greater intention that the use of those products affect both health and well-being.
The second session was presented by Prof. Dr. Yaser Amin, Professor of Psychiatry who stressed on the additional psychological support that should be provided and always consider asking a healthcare professional to talk with about the risks of e-cigarettes.
Several harms from seven categories were reported about electronic cigarettes: chemical exposures, device explosions, addiction, cardiovascular harm, respiratory harm, e-liquid toxicity, and other harms. Medical Outcomes were awareness of the harms.
Takeaway Message: The slogan of the day was about vaping isn’t a “one-and-done” conversation – bring it up again from time to time.
