The Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering, through ArchReach at October University For Modern Sciences And Arts (MSA), successfully organized the Junior Green Architect Workshop, welcoming school students aged 10–15 for an engaging educational experience focused on green architecture, sustainability, and environmental awareness.
Designed to introduce young learners to the fundamentals of sustainable design, the workshop combined interactive learning with hands-on activities that encouraged creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking while inspiring participants to explore the role of architecture in creating healthier communities.
The workshop began with a practical session organized in collaboration with the MSA Center of Earth, where students were introduced to clay as an environmentally friendly building material. Working collaboratively in small groups, participants explored the material’s properties before designing and creating their own clay pieces and miniature architectural models. This activity provided an enjoyable introduction to sustainable construction while fostering creativity, communication, and teamwork.
In the second part of the workshop, participants discovered the basic principles of sustainable architecture, exploring concepts such as green spaces, shading strategies, trees, natural elements, water features, and outdoor comfort. Through an interactive Campus Quest, students toured the MSA campus to identify real-life examples of sustainable design features integrated within the university environment.
Building on these observations, participants took part in a Campus Mapping Challenge, where they translated their findings into simple sketches and design ideas for greener, more comfortable outdoor spaces. The activity encouraged students to observe their surroundings through the eyes of young designers while developing problem-solving and spatial thinking skills.
The Junior Green Architect Workshop successfully combined architectural education, creativity, and sustainability in an enjoyable and interactive format. By encouraging participants to collaborate, think critically, and engage with their environment, the workshop highlighted the importance of sustainable design and empowered the next generation to contribute to building greener, healthier, and more resilient communities.
