Faculty of Arts and Design Visits Fustat Traditional Crafts Center

As part of the practical learning activities of the Furniture Design 311 course, the Faculty of Arts and Design at October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA) organized an educational field trip to the Fustat Traditional Crafts Center, offering students an opportunity to explore Egypt’s rich craftsmanship heritage.

During the visit, students gained firsthand insights into traditional Egyptian handicrafts, exploring the materials, production processes, and techniques that have shaped the country’s artistic and cultural identity.

The field trip also encouraged students to examine the aesthetic and functional values of traditional crafts and draw inspiration from their distinctive elements to develop innovative contemporary furniture designs that blend authenticity with modernity while addressing the needs of today’s society.

The visit was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Ola Ali Hashem, Dr. Nada Orisha, and Dr. Yomna Hamdy, with the participation of AL. Nesma Alaa and teaching assistants Sara Okba and Reem El-Gohary, who accompanied students throughout this educational experience.

Through this hands-on experience, MSA University continues to emphasize the importance of experiential learning in enhancing students’ creativity, strengthening their practical design skills, and fostering a deeper appreciation of Egyptian cultural heritage.

The visit also highlighted the role of future designers in preserving and revitalizing traditional craftsmanship by integrating its artistic values into contemporary design practices.
