Faculty of Mass Communication Brings Students Together for a Screen-Free Experience

The Faculty of Mass Communication at October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA) brought students together for a special day dedicated to the community initiative “Together, A Screen-Free Day,” highlighting the importance of creating a healthier balance between digital devices and real-life interaction.
The Faculty, led by Prof. Dr. Amani Fahmy, Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication, hosted Prof. Dr. Mona El-Hadidy, Professor of Radio and Television at the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, Member of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, and the founder of the “Together, A Screen-Free Day” initiative. The Faculty also welcomed Mr. Ahmed Abdel Aleem Qassem, Director and Writer and General Manager of Tourism and Entertainment at Nile TV.
The day featured a variety of activities supporting the initiative and encouraging students to reflect on their relationship with electronic devices and digital platforms.
One of the highlights was a discussion of “Toy Story 5,” which addresses the issue of children’s addiction to social media platforms. The discussion explored the impact of excessive digital engagement and its implications for children.
The programme also featured a Talent Show, where MSA students showcased their talents in singing and poetry recitation, with the audience actively engaging with and celebrating their diverse creative abilities.
The event also featured the results of a survey study conducted by Prof. Dr. Eman Musharafa, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Community Service and Environmental Development, exploring students’ experiences of spending time away from electronic screens.
As part of the initiative, a number of Drama Club students took part in an experimental activity in which they spent one hour away from their electronic devices while participating in acting performance training. The experience provided an opportunity to engage in a creative, hands-on activity without screens.
An open discussion was also held with students and faculty members, focusing on the longest period they had spent away from their electronic devices and how they felt during the experience. The discussion encouraged participants to share their reflections and consider the value of being more present in real-life activities and interactions.
The day concluded with the recognition of talented students and students who participated in the “One Hour Without Screens” experience, celebrating their engagement and active participation in the initiative.
Through “Together, A Screen-Free Day,” the Faculty of Mass Communication continues to support community initiatives that encourage meaningful human interaction, creativity, and greater awareness of the role technology plays in everyday life.
