Sustainability and Beyond Prospects in the Built Environment Conference
The Fourth annual conference at the Faculty of Engineering at October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA University) successfully concluded its conference “Sustainability and Beyond: Prospects in the Built Environment" which focused on a range of important topics.
 
The event attracted a significant number of professors and experts in architectural engineering, both from Egypt and around the world. It was honoured by the presence of Dr. Nawal El-Degwi, Chair of the Board of Trustees), Professor Khairy Abdel Hamid (President of the University), Prof. Dr. Nahed Sobhi (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering), Dr. Omar Fawzy, (Program Leader of Architecture Department), Ms. Mona Afifi (Head, Central UK Quality Assurance Unit), Prof. Dr. Maysa Mahmoud Fathi Omar (Head of the Quality Unit), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shady Shawky Saifelnasr, (Head of Architecture Department), and with the presence of the respected Vice Deans: Prof. Dr. Tarek El-Hossainy, Prof. Dr. Yehia Elhalwagy, and Prof. Dr. Nabila Nowaira, and a large number of faculty members and students from the Faculty of Engineering.
 
The conference featured distinguished keynote speakers from various sectors of academia and practice, including:
- Prof. Dr. Maher Stino - Founder of Sites International, an award-winning landscape architecture and urban planning firm with over 30 years of experience.
- Prof. Dr. Laila ElMasry - Cofounder and Principle of Sites International, a multi-disciplinary consultancy firm specializing in designing integrated environments.
- Prof. Dr. Alaa El-Habashi - Professor of architecture and heritage conservation, and chairs the Department of Architecture at Menoufia University.
- Prof. Dr. Debbie Bartlett - Chartered Landscape Architect and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.
- Prof. Dr. Nermine AbdelGelil - Professor in Architectural Engineering and founder of the MSA Centre of Earth Architecture.
- Eng. Rami El Dahan - After working with Architect Hassan Fathy between 1979 and 1989, he founded Rami El Dahan & Soheir Farid Architects in 1983.
- Eng. Soheir Farid - Architect and founding partner of El Dahan & Farid Engineering Consultants, Ltd.
- Dr. Mohamed Anees - Over 13 years of professional experience in Egypt, USA, and the Gulf region
- Eng. Mouaz Abouzaid - Founder, Design Principal at Verfor.
 
Their diverse backgrounds and expertise brought a rich perspective to the discussions on sustainability and the built environment. Wide range of research papers were discussed during the conference. These papers addressed pressing topics related to the different themes of the conference: “Energy Assessment and Building Performance Analytics,” “Healthy Indoor Environment,” “Smart Environment and Green Technologies,” “Sustainable Urban Design,” “Climate Change Action,” and “Retrofit and Resilience.”
 
The presentations fostered lively debates and opened new avenues for collaborative research. Two workshops were conducted on MSA campus; the first workshop entitled “Designing Interactive and Sustainable Urban Open Spaces on University Campuses" was led by Dr. Hasnaa Elsherbiny, while the second workshop entitled “Environmental Simulations 101: Harnessing Ladybug & Honeybee for Sustainable Design,” was presented by Dr. Mohamed Rafik.
 
Sincere thanks to the organising committee of the conference, including Dr. Mohamed Rafik AbdelMeguid, Dr. Rana Adel Ibrahim, Dr. Shereen Farouk Abo Dagher, Dr. Aya Magdi Younis Awad, and Dr. Lobna Ahmed Galal, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tarek Abd Alsalam, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shady Shawky Saifelnasr (Head of the Architecture Department), for their efforts in organising this remarkable event. Gratitude is also expressed to the assistant lecturers, teaching assistants, ushers, and members of the media department in MSA for their commitment and effort in ensuring the success of this conference.
