From Lab to Factory: Learning About Biopharmaceuticals
The Microbiology and Immunology Department at the Faculty of Pharmacy at October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA) is thrilled to share that Level 4 Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Biopharmaceuticals students recently completed a very informative field trip to the Unit of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering at the National Research Center (NRC).
During the visit, they explored how biopharmaceuticals are made on a large scale, with special focus on bioreactors and fermentation technology—key tools in producing biologic medicines.
The trip traced the full journey of fermentation, from upstream processes to downstream processing.Experts highlighted the complexities of transitioning lab-scale processes to industrial production. Discussions linked these processes to the production of antibiotics, monoclonal antibodies, and other life-saving biologics.
This experience bridged textbook theory with industrial practice, empowering students to visualize their role in the biopharmaceutical production.
