MSA’s Faculty of Languages Celebrates Its First Master’s Thesis Defense
In a remarkable academic milestone for the Faculty of Languages at October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA), researcher Faten Abdel Fattah El Kafrawy successfully defended the first master’s thesis ever submitted by a the faculty of Languages at MSA University.
Her thesis, titled “Bias and Hallucination in the Machine: An Application to English <> Arabic, Neural Google Translate” explores one of the most pressing and contemporary issues in the field of linguistics and translation studies — the challenges of bias and accuracy in AI-driven translation systems.
The discussion and judgment committee included a distinguished panel of experts:
-Prof. Dr. Shokry Abdel-Moneim Mohamed Megahed, Professor at the Faculty of Education, Ain Shams University, and renowned translator (Chair and Examiner).
-Prof. Dr. Safaa Ahmed Saleh Mostafa Ahmed, Professor of Linguistics and Translation at the Faculty of Languages, MSA University (Supervisor and Member).
-Prof. Dr. Rania Abdel-Baky Ali Allam, Associate Professor of Linguistics and Translation at the Faculty of Languages, MSA University (Examiner and Member).
The defense session was marked by a rich academic atmosphere. Prof. Dr. Shokry Megahed praised the originality and timeliness of the research topic, emphasizing that the study of bias in machine translation is a vital contribution to modern translation studies. He also shared insights from his own theoretical framework, “Retrieval in Translation,” encouraging researchers to embrace the richness of the Arabic language and to preserve its cultural and linguistic essence in academic work.
Prof. Dr. Rania Allam highlighted the importance of contextual awareness in translation, stressing the need to move beyond literal translation to achieve a deeper understanding of meaning. She noted the limitations of machine translation in capturing subtle linguistic and cultural nuances, especially in humor and cultural references.
