Linguistics and TEFL: From Theory to Practice

In part of the outstanding success of the Linguist Lounge initiative launched earlier this year by the Faculty of Languages, the session entitled “Linguistics and TEFL: From Theory to Practice” was successfully held on March 30th 2022.

The session was delivered by David Newby, Professor of linguistics and language teaching didactics and research, University of Graz, Austria.

In the session professor Newby explained to the students the required potentials and skills that qualify English Language Students to meet the challenges of the 21st century as global citizens.

He explored the roles played by theories and approaches based on cognitive aspects and discussed the gap between theory and practice in the field of linguistics and TEFL studies and how this gap can be reduced. In addition, he emphasized the importance of investing in communicative, linguistic and cognitive competencies in teaching and language learning in general.

The session was well attended by both students and academic staff members where the discussions were lively and informative.
