Interior Design Students Visit "As-Suhaiymi House" in Historic Cairo

Within the schedule of (INTR351 – Heritage of Interior Design), students of Interior Design at the Faculty of Arts and Design have paid a working field visit to 'As-Suhaymi House' in Historic Cairo at 'El Darb El Asfar' street off 'Al Muizz' street. It is one of the prominent houses in Cairo that dates back to the 18th century (Ottoman Period) and is regarded as a perfect example for the style of decoration and designing at that time.

"The main portal of the house opens onto a bent entrance and is followed by a vast open courtyard with a fountain in its center. This courtyard is annexed by an area with nice seats 'takhtabush' where men used to gather and negotiate work affairs. The second floor of the house is enclosing a loggia (maq'ad) as an informal reception area in addition to the (qa'a)- a formal central reception hall with huge windows treated with (mashrabiyya) wooden screens and a nice open dome (shokhsheikha) over the central part (Durqa'a) for ventilation and illumination."

Students visited and photographed all the spaces within the house and are required to submit photos and drawings of the place. Most importantly is that they expressed their satisfaction and happiness of having been able to live in that famous historic house for half a day. They were together with their course instructor Prof. Dr. Aleya Abdel-Hadi and L. A. Karam Abdallah.
