Architecture Students Claim the Trophies’ Stand in International UN Competition

On April 11th 2014 in Medellin, Colombia on the final day of the World Urban Forum 7 Conference, the winners of the Urban Revitalization of Mass Housing International Architectural Competition organized by the UN-Habitat organization were announced. Prizes were awarded to the winning entries on three levels: Globally, Regionally, and Nationally. It is with great pride to announce the distinctive achievement of MSA Team3 who won the 3rd place on the Regional level which included entries from universities from all Arab States, and 2nd place jointly with MSA Team1 on the National level which included entries from Egyptian universities. It is worthy to note that no other university from Egypt was among the winners, only the two teams from MSA, since the first on the National level was the team from the American University of Sharjah!

A total of 97 teams from 55 universities representing 35 countries over 7 geographic regions participated in this international competition which was open to students and recent graduates from all over the world. The geographic regions included: the Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Western Europe and other OECD Countries (Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, USA, Etc.), and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The decision to enter the competition and have it as part of the 400 level design course (Design 7) during the Fall semester 2013 was made by the Head of the Department in his effort to encourage the participation and exposure of Architecture students in national and international student competitions. Four teams from MSA under the supervision of Dr. Ashraf Botros, Dr. Hany Serageldin and lecturer assistant Heba Hussein as team leader participated in the competition. Each team was composed of 5 or 6 members including a recent graduate TA, and students from the 400 and 500 levels. The Winning teams are:

3rd Regional Prize (Arab States) and 2nd National Prize (Egypt), MSA Team3:
Harram City/Urban Revitalization: A Tale of Two Cities: Mariam El Sheikh (TA), Mohamed Gehad El Kholy, Heba Darwish, Hana Albarazi, Mostafa Salem and Mohamed Adham.

2nd National Prize (Egypt), MSA Team1:
Ibni Beitak/Urban Revitalization: A New Approach: Noha Darwish (TA), Eslam Salem, Lina Al Dawood, Amr Sherif and Diaa Abou Eisheh.

Winning in national and international design competitions is not new to Architectural students of MSA. Ever since winning the first prize in the 1st student design competition organized by Cairo University back in 2006, MSA’s Architectural Department’s track record has been impeccable. Most recently, MSA students won the 2nd place in the Ezbet Community Center design competition organized by Stuttgart University and Ain Shams University back in November 2013. This follows winning 3rd prize in a national student design competition organized by Ain Shams University in February 2013, and the list goes on and on. Congratulations MSA!

MSA Director of Quality Issuance & Audit Unit Mrs Mona Afifi had the following to say to the prizewinning champions, “From now on, I will no longer present you as the Architecture Department because YOU ARE the AWARD WINNERS DEPARTMENT”

This comprehensive report was prepared by Dr. Omar Fawzy. MSA thanks you and thanks everyone who helped and participated in this honourable representation, we wish you the best of success.
